The Young Academy

Forming part of the KVAB, the Young Academy operates autonomously as an association of young top researchers and artists with their own views on policy, society, research and the arts. The Young Academy was founded in 2013 on the initiative of Prof. Dr. Dominique Willems and Prof. Dr. Hilde De Ridder-Symoens within the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB) and the Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature (KANTL). The Young Academy uses the KVAB secretariat.

It formulates views and opinions, organizes events on relevant topics and explicitly reaches out to the authorities and the public to assist, where possible, in tackling societal challenges. The academic members are affiliated with a Flemish university and/or a Flemish or federal academic research institution and upon joining, have obtained their PhD degree between three and ten years previously. The artist members are minimum 25 and maximum 39 years of age and have a strong affinity with the topics of interest to the Young Academy. Membership lasts for five years. Candidates are elected after an open call, based on an outstanding track record and a strong motivation. The Young Academy strives to encompass the various academic and artistic disciplines.
